Circular water use: this is how Kwekerij de Zuidplas grows sustainable gerberas

Circular water use forms the basis of our sustainable cultivation method. At Kwekerij de Zuidplas, not a single drop is wasted. We collect rainwater, purify drain water, and reuse nutrients. This is how we have been growing gerberas with respect for the environment since 1979.

How circular water use works in our greenhouses

Circular water use means that water is used again and again. In our modern greenhouses, the drain water from the plants flows back to a central storage. There, it is purified and enriched with new nutrients. The water then goes back to the plants. This closed system prevents waste and significantly reduces our ecological footprint.

Rainwater as the main source

We collect all the rainwater that falls on our greenhouse roofs. This water is stored in large basins. It forms the primary water source for our entire greenhouse. Rainwater is naturally soft and contains few minerals, making it ideal for growing gerberas. By using rainwater smartly, we are less dependent on expensive tap water. Our advanced storage system guarantees sufficient supply, even during dry periods. This is the core of our circular water use.

Purification and reuse of drain water

The water that leaves the plant roots still contains valuable nutrients. Throwing it away would be a waste. That is why we thoroughly purify this drain water through our reuse systems. Special filters remove impurities and pathogens. The remaining minerals are measured and supplemented. This way, each gerbera gets exactly what it needs. We repeat this process continuously. Nothing is lost thanks to circular water use.

The benefits of circular water use for our gerberas

Circular water use not only benefits the environment. It also improves the quality of our flowers. By constantly monitoring the water, plants always receive the right nutrition. This results in strong stems and vibrant colors. Our customers notice the difference immediately.

Better growing conditions through water control

We measure the composition of our irrigation water daily. The technology in our greenhouses makes this possible. Sensors automatically register pH values and nutrient levels. If there are deviations, the system adjusts immediately. Gerberas grow best under stable conditions. Our water management system guarantees that stability. The result is a gerbera with a shelf life of up to two weeks. That is the direct result of circular water use.

Less impact on the environment

As a family business, we feel responsible for nature. That is why we have been investing for years in sustainable and environmentally conscious cultivation. By reusing water, we do not discharge nutrients into surface water. This protects local water quality. In addition, we save energy because we need to pump and treat less fresh water. Every gerbera that leaves our nursery carries these sustainable values. That is what circular water use stands for.
