Kwekerij de Zuidplas offers gerberas in no less than seventy different colors, an exceptionally large number. Not only is this quantity remarkable, but the two-tone flowers are also quite special. These gerberas are mixed in red and white, pink and white, or orange and yellow. Due to the international market in which the nursery operates, they deal with the different preferences of various countries.

Cultural differences and preferences

Grower Juriaan actually enjoys these cultural differences in taste, including the associated trips abroad. So, what are the favorite colors? Juriaan: “In the Netherlands, the most popular colors are pastel shades of pink, cream, and purple. Personally, I also think these colors are the most beautiful for a bouquet.”

From England to Germany, Scandinavia, and France

The nursery supplies gerberas in all colors within a radius of 2,000 kilometers in Europe. In addition, they also supply Russia and America. What stands out is that each country has its own wishes. Juriaan: “In England, our customers mostly choose pink and purple. In Germany, they prefer orange and red. Our northern neighbors, the Scandinavians, often go for red and pink, although their preferences can vary quite a bit over time. In romantic France, yellow and pink are favorites. This is how cultures seep into preferences, which is great to experience as a grower.”

“A small color difference can make a huge difference. Because that one red rose may or may not match that one red gerbera.”

Gerberas fit perfectly in any bouquet

The reason why Kwekerij de Zuidplas offers so many colors is that the gerbera is a bouquet flower. It is also a versatile flower that pairs well with other flowers. However, a small color difference can make a huge impact. Because that one red rose may or may not match that one red gerbera. “We enjoy thinking along with our customers about this. For inspiration and to find out which color best suits the bouquet. Sample trials are always available upon request.”

Different colors in the same flower

With the extensive assortment in the basic colors white, red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, and cream, the gerbera always fits in a bouquet. In addition, there are the special two-tone flowers, and each color has a whole spectrum. And then there is the beautiful heart, in green or black. According to Juriaan, however, no new colors have been added recently. “But the existing colors have been expanded, for example in lighter or darker shades. Think of several shades of purple.”
