6. Collecting residual water in the dirt drain

Not all the water given to the plant is absorbed. The surplus, including remaining nutrients, is collected in gutters under the plants. This water flows to a so-called dirty water silo.

This residual water still contains valuable nutrients but cannot be reused immediately due to the possible presence of bacteria and viruses. Therefore, it is first stored separately before being filtered.

By collecting this water separately, it remains available for further processing, and Kwekerij de Zuidplas prevents both waste and environmental impact. This step thus forms an important link in the circular system, in which water is not lost but is prepared for reuse.
